Is it safe to live in Belize or Honduras?

The quick answer is yes. We as foreigners living full-time in another country, we respect the local government rules and we live by best practices. There are dangerous areas in both countries just like there are dangerous areas in most major cities. You just don’t go to those areas.

Does a missionary get paid time off?

As a matter of fact, YES! WGO offers 2 weeks of paid time off for missionaries starting out. Honduras and the surrounding countries have so much to offer in the way of tourism. You can Zip Line the longest Zip Line in Central America in Honduras, sled down an active volcano in Nicaragua, feed wild monkeys in El Salvador, visit the 2nd oldest working clock in the world in Honduras, ride Intertubes in a cave in Belize, and so much more.

Do I need to establish any legal precedence upon arriving?

The wonderful thing about becoming a missionary with WGO is that in Belize and Honduras, our organization is established and set up. You do not have to worry about where your office or work location is, that is all set up for you.

Do you have to raise money to be a missionary?

Yes, it is a unique privilege to be called by God to raise your support to go serve His people. You raise your support to have a paycheck to cover your living expenses. WGO has taken care of establishing our ministry with the government so that you can begin your ministry work immediately. That is many thousands of dollars and much time spent trying to get set up that you do not have to worry about. And relax, there are many successful missionaries that are ready to coach you on best practices and encourage you along the way.

Are there good restaurants to eat at?

What is really neat about livinOPg in a foreign country is that you get to experience a new culture. There are unique dishes in both countries that the locals are best known for. Having an open mind and a good appetite is the best recipe for finding food.

Do I have to learn another language?

In Belize, they are known for speaking English as their primary language, Spanish next, and there is also a form of Creole. In Honduras, you will speak Spanish, but don’t worry, WGO will have you go to language school so that you will be able to connect with the culture fast. Being able to speak a 2nd language is a great opportunity to enhance your resume. Also, both countries are very welcoming to people who try to communicate in their language. Plus, you will find many people who know some or a lot of 2 languages.

Is it easy to start a new life as a missionary?

WGO prides itself on doing its very best to take care of its staff. You will find that either country has a lot to offer in the way of household items, electronics, and vehicle options. You will have a support system built-in with WGO that will help your transition be a lot smoother than you realize.

Is it fun being a missionary?

Yes, it can be amazing, but there are times that you will be tested as well. Working cross-culturally and learning to live in a new environment can be challenging. But when you are serving the Lord, satan wants to step in and make you feel as though you can’t do it or aren’t good enough. That is where having a strong relationship with the Lord is critical so that when satan attacks, you will be ready. Coming with an open mind and can-do attitude and willingness to meet new people will allow you to have the most fun you could imagine.
